SADC Ministerial Conference on Education for Children with Disabilities

OSISA will - in collaboration with the (SAALED) - host a ministerial conference on Education for Children with Disabilities. The conference will be held in Johannesburg from 3-4 July.

Under the theme ‘Dismantling Exclusion to Ensure Inclusion’ the conference will bring together Ministers and Permanent Secretaries of Ministries of Education from across the Southern Africa region.

The conference will be a space for the Ministerial representatives to make input into the development of a Regional Framework for Inclusive Education, specifically for children living with disabilities. At the end of the conference a communiqué will be developed and it is anticipated that this framework will be discussed at the next SADC Education Minister’s Conference.

The development of the framework emanates from a five country study for Southern Africa conducted in 2011 to look at the state of education for children with disabilities. The study, conducted by the Secretariat of the African Decade of Persons with Disabilities (SADPD), was followed by a regional conference held in Swaziland in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. The conference drew together both state and non-state actors. The development of the framework was  a recommendation from this to guide the delivery of quality education services for children with disabilities.
