Bench Marks Foundation

The Bench Marks Foundation was formed in 2001 by church agencies, linked to the South African Council of Churches (SACC) concerned with the unethical behaviour of business and how they could be held accountable in the democratic South Africa, and more broadly in the continent as a whole.

The Bench Marks Foundation was formed in 2001 by church agencies, linked to the South African Council of Churches (SACC) concerned with the unethical behaviour of business and how they could be held accountable in the democratic South Africa, and more broadly in the continent as a whole. It was registered in 2002 and opened an office in 2003.The core purpose of the Bench Marks Foundation is to hold corporations accountable for their actions in terms of human rights, social and ecological impacts and to strengthen the voice and capacity of the affected communities in the process of engaging companies on such issues. It is a section 21, Non-Profit Consortium and is registered as the Bench Marks Foundation-NPC in terms of the Companies Act, and also registered as a Non-Profit Organisation (NP), with the Department of Social Development.
